Stacked English AND Spanish Math MAP Test (emergent bilingual students)
I love that the MAP Growth tests are offered in both English and Spanish. However, we are noticing a consistent issue in scores from newcomer students (those here between 1-3 years).
When they first come and take the test in Spanish, the scores are fairly accurate to what they are demonstrating in class. However, after that, all future learning is done primarily in English. If we continue testing in Spanish, they show minimal growth because they don't always know the vocabulary in their L1 (native language) and are unable to accurately demonstrate these new concepts on a Spanish test. Yet, if we transition them to an English test, they often do not have the English Language development necessary to demonstrate previously learned concepts from their L1 (especially if they are coming in 6th, 7th, 8th grade...as it takes time to map 8 years of vocabulary onto a new language) and they don't score high enough to access and demonstrate their new learning.
I have also noticed this is not happening on our Statewide test which "stacks" Spanish AND English directions on the same page. The scores they receive on this test appear to accurately represent what they can do (according to their in class work). However, it is only given once a year and can not provide the same data breakdown as NWEA.
Has there been any thought to stacking translations on the same page for the Math test? This would be very beneficial for emerging bilingual students who are "translanguaging" (or working within multiple languages at the same time to process content and make meaning).
I know the data provided by NWEA is very useful when determining classroom scaffolds and supports. We don't want to waste precious classroom time retesting or regrouping students because the assessments being used aren't accurately reflecting their abilities and understanding of key concepts. I am hoping this might be an easy update that the assessment platform could support.
