Progress Monitoring Frustrations
The idea of having students read using a mic for fluency progress monitoring is a novel idea. However, the practical side is not exactly working for many of our special education students and teachers. We are only looking for them to read for one minute for progress monitoring. Due to the system, they have to read the entire passage, with the comp questions, which ends up with a slew of issues and problems. Many students are timing out due to the length. We are seeing behaviors rise due to the frustrations of the length. Teachers frustration has risen drastically due to the fact that they have to take the additional time to go in and hand score most of the students. Just a couple quick recommendations. 1) Give the option to not have to take the comp questions. Many teachers just need the fluency. Requiring this is pulling students for longer periods from their academic instruction as well. 2) Provide the option for the teacher to proctor it live or just to have print copies of the passages. I understand it might be for copyright, but I'm starting to see a growing number of our teachers not using your progress monitoring and finding alternate places for passages, like easycbm. 3) Simply provide and option where it is timed for one minute and stops. This would alleviate alot of the student frustration for our struggling students.
